FRIDAY 19 FEB:
After browsing a lot of B/W YouTube slide shows this morning I could not quite get my head round why so many of the images looked more 'interesting' than they deserved to be. On a whim I opened an archive from a holiday a few years ago and randomly converted whole days worth of images [several hundred] to black and white.
The result was totally not what I had expected! Un-noticed textures shapes and compositions stood out and previously underwhelming colour images suddenly had possibilities. All this without any 'tweaking' other than removing the colour!
A lot of my concerns about how essential colour was to my 'holiday' and 'reference' archive seems to be fading and when I refer back to the colour vertions they seem garish and somehow flat!
Scanning 1996 negs today and realised the degree to which I was basically just taking photos as a record with very little thought of aesthetics!
